Wanderlust + Stuff = Art

Hey Guys,

You know whats funny about being an artist?

A huge part of it is sitting on your butt, not creating not drawing not painting, just looking at stuff. Other people's art, movies, comics, nature, life in general. What makes an artist is the ability to take in the world around them and funnel it into an image. This struck me today and wouldn't let go, it was a revelation of sorts and I wanted to share with you. That's all. Oh, and here's a doodle I did while think-think-thinking about this.

Wanderlust is a strong desire for or impulse to wander or travel and explore the world.

The Innner Workings of an Artist, or, How'd You Do That??

Hello Lovelies,

At the moment while I'm waiting for my paints to defrost (the wonder of oils) I'm drawing up this flow chart of how my creative process works...

And here it is!

This flow chart revealed much about my process I wasn't aware of.
I can't believe how often I get bored, or that not talking about my ideas leads to dead ends. I'm also surprised that my paintings come out good if I've planned out every detail or if I just jump in. How do you all create? I strongly encourage you to try this exercise, it's a lot of fun!

p.s. I used Microsoft Paint (MSpaint) to make this.

Bowie, not THAT Bowie & The Alamo

The Alamo,
Where a few brave dudes stood their ground. Davy Crockett, Bowie (No, not that Bowie) and many others gave it all against the worst of odds. My family visited San Antonio for two days, we visited the River Walk and needless to say, The Alamo. While we strolled down the paths lining the San Antonio River, enjoying the cafes, street music and scenery, I couldn't help but marvel at this place called Texas. I'm born and raised in the Northwest, home of computers, coffee and rain, lots of cold rain. Down in San Antonio it was a humid 83 degrees, sunny, and the trees, excuse me, the PALM trees were nice and green.
Yup, Texas is turning out all right.

Oh, and HAppy Thanks Giving!

NASA, The BBC and Painting Spacemen

Hello Friends!

First I want to tell you I have a BIG SECRET PROJECT I'm working on. You can all be apart of it, but I'm not quite ready to share.. more on it later!

For now.. today I was having trouble with my spaceman painting, particularly the spaceman. I feel like his suite doesn't have enough going on. It needs more layers, dials, tubes, and doo-dads. It needs to feel more vintage 1950's or 60's.
So while I did add some lime green, and a little orange, I've mostly been researching and drawing more concept art.
Here's another peek of it so far.

So while I was digging around on the Internet looking for my inspiration, I found this old footage. It's a BBC1 (British Broadcasting for you outside of the UK) demonstration of the Luna EVA, or as we know it, the Apollo Space suite. I really enjoyed it, hope you do too!

Stay Artsy, DFTBA and more to come on the SECRET project!

Video Highlight: Creativity Without Pressure

This video (made by KreativMagazin) is brilliant! It demonstrates how creativity without the pressure of time produces the best results.

Now, pick up a pencil and draw!

Bird like View, Shiny Stuff I LOVE

Hello Friends!

Last July I moved to Dallas Texas with my Family.
We rented a small flat, lugged our stuff up the stairs and squeezed it all in Janga style.

Now, We're stepping up to a new larger apartment, with 3 bedrooms, a huge deck and many other amenities. This is fabulous news, except, we have to pack all our stuff and move again, down a flight of stairs and up another. My back hurts already!

So, because I unpacked all my little treasures thinking we'd be here longer, I wanted to share some small snap shots of my room. You know, before it's torn all apart again. oh the horror.

I'm like a bird, I collect things that are alike. Shiny metal boxes, beautiful cigar boxes, white smooth ceramics, editions of Alice in Wonderland, old chandlers.. etc. I even pick what goes on my wall carefully. Old black and white photographs of my ancestors, my paintings and paintings by my family, vintage postcards, and mirrors fill the space over my bed. I need to be surrounded by the things that represent what and who I love.

What is it that you love and surround yourself with?

Hello Friends,

Enjoying this fall weather? Cold, yes but beautiful bits of the holidays are popping up everywhere. Yesterday I fell particularly hard for seasonal temptations like Eeg Nog, Pepperage Farm wafer cookies, and now my coffee is spike with a Christmas infusion of cinnamon and Chi.
Not that there's anything wrong about eating peppermint cookies throughout the day.. I think. Anyways, I think it's justified since I'm laid up with an injury. Two days ago while walking back from the mail box, my hip decided to leave the party. I nearly fell head first into a garbage can! However, my will to make it back to the apartment was stronger than that, so, with two inch steps and a lot of groaning I crossed the parking lot, climbed two flight of stairs, unlocked my door and fell onto the couch.

Even today It's hard to walk, but with the assistance of warm baths, and my wondrous bag of cookies, all will be well again. One of the silver linings in this mess is that I get to use those nifty automated carts in the grocery stores. The odd thing about being young and using them is what people think of me. Some people assumed I was just having a fun spin anddidn't approve, others thought I was dieing of a horrible condition/disease. All the older free sample ladies at CostCo were very concerned over me, bless they're hearts!  The cure to my condition is probably as simple as a Yoga class.

Another silver lining is that I've been drawing and painting quite a lot!
Here's an illustration I doodled yesterday. I didn't plan anything about it, and I kind of love it's meandering 1960's feel. It's Sharpi and Watercolor. Maybe I'll make it into a print for sale.

Floating Castle Vision

Hello Friends!

This is a concept I'm working on.
A floating castle over a country side. One morning while I was in France my group had to get up at 4am to catch a train. It was a beautiful trip through the rural fields. I was so tired at one point I fell asleep with my head against the window. I dreamt of a hovering ancient castle out my window. It felt so real that I started awake. I haven't been able to shake it off, so what better to do with this vision than paint it? It will have soft, milky greens, blues and browns.

I used this vintage 1950's post card as reference.
I love old postcards! I have a rather large collection that comes in handy for reference photos and decoration. This is Whitby Abbey, Yorkshire England. One of these days I'll have to devote a post to my collection!

Fashion and Secret X

Hello Friends!
Did you have a Spooky Halloween?

Yesterday I bought my sisters birthday present. Now I'm going to refer to her present as X because she might read this. So I bought X and since I didn't have a car that day I had to carry it all the way home. X is very, very heavy! It almost makes me wish there weren't so many of X. In fact it's so heavy that the store gave me a cardboard box to carry X home in.The second I crossed my doorstep I collapsed onto the couche. My arms are still sore today! It wasn't easy, but I know she'll LOVE X and keep it forever, so it's worth the effort.

On November 14 It'll be my sisters birthday and I'll let you all in on the secret, but until then feel free to try and guess what it is :)

Remember last weekend's Road Trip?
While my parents were paying for lunch, my sister kindly snapped a few photos for this week's look.

Oxfords: Target, $25
Wool Coat: Coffee Shop, $110
Purple Purse: Target, $14 ( On Sale!)
Skinny Jeans, New York & Co., $10 (Another Sale!)

You might have notice that the Coat is much more expensive than anything else and that because I only like to splurge on wool coats. They last forever and will always be in style, basically they're a good investment.

All of these photos were taken by my very talented sister, Josephine!
Thanks Josephine, you're the greatest :)
