A Fancy Sort of Turkey

It's funny how things can be so beautiful from afar, like a butterfly or a bunny rabbit. Then you grab a magnifying glass or visit a pet store and WHOA THERE, that thing has red eyes/creepy pinchers.

Turns out Peacocks are like that too.

Beautiful vibrant plumage but up close they're just glorified turkeys. honestly, I did a lot of picture research for my painting and in real life this graceful arched neck can only be found on a swan.

Ah well that's what "creative licence" is for.

If anyone is wondering about this pink lines, It's a technique I believe I invented. I like to call it string theory (hahahah, Big Bang Theory Humor) and it goes like this...

1. I do the primary color blocking and paint the whole canvas.
2. While still wet I stretch thick string across the surface making sure the paint grabs on and holds it in place.
3. Next I paint right over the top of the whole painting, adding shading, changing colors, going where it generally leads me.
4. Finally when I feel the painting is done, I slowly pull off the string leaving the previous layers showing in all they're slightly staggered glory.

I think it's added interest to what would otherwise be a one dimensional feeling painting. That rough edge contrast with the careful blending and yeah.. That's what those strings are :)

The Pooka and My Absent Fear of Colors

 Latly I've had some trouble with my art. It sort of felt like I had built up to many rules in my head about what "good" at is saposed to be. This paralized any creative thought I might have had. It felt like my every move was predictable and boring. Thats a bad place to be in as an artist. When I can't paint my mood is like a Thanks Giving feast in a blender, grey, unpredictable and not fun to be around.

So, what did I do about it? I sulked a bit, then grabbed all of my favorite things around me a smooshed them together in a painting that I refused to let myself judge or think about while creating it.

Inside my head the monologue was somewhat like this:

".....hmmmm... Red, yes thats good.. bow ties... goats are nice... lace and.. and... Hitch Hikers Guide... Pooka.....more blue... Harvey the Rabbit, ...More scribbles over here... I need some tea.. YELLOW..."

IT felt SO GOOD to just let it all lose, to paint for me, the real me not the "will this sell?" me or the "Is this to hippy?" me or the "Will this match the furniture? me. Nope, this is for the honest to God real Sarah, and I'm sorry that I let her get muffled up by other things.


So, meet my Friend, he's a Pooka a sort of imaginary friend and he likes color. The qoute is from Miike Snow's Black and Blue. The lace bits on the end are from Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, The Pooka bit is from Harvey an old movie. The color scheme is from Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy (yes books have color schemes in my head) and I'm DARN sure the bow tie came from Doctor Who. Antlers are just cool and I like a Nutty Professo-ish air in my creatures.

I love my Pooka, and my tea is getting cold,

Adventures in Fort Worth

A few days ago a friend of the family's came down from Washington to visit.

We all hopped into the car and headed for barbecue in Fort Worth. It was my first time being in a barbecue joint. Surrounded by neon beer signs, mounted deer heads, and wood grain brought me back to days in Idaho when my rough-it-out-in-a-tent-with-a-beer-and-grill-for-5-weeks-Grandparents were still around. God bless them, they were far tougher than I'll ever be. My Grandma won a big buck hunting competition, and she wouldn't take crap from anyone. My Grandpa Howard knew how to play a mean hand of cards, and when he was losing "innocently" would itch his nose with a certain finger. I remember when they gave my sister and I each a pair of real leather cowboy boots. Now I'm not the slightest interested in cowboy culture, but it was nice feeling close to them in spirit.

 We stopped at three places that night, the aformentioned barbecue pit, a wine bar called Winslow's (Delicious truffle brownie and two cappuccinos) and a place called The Ginger Man for my parents to taste some microwbrew.

The evening was a fun one, reminiscing on what makes Washington (STATE) so great, what we've discovered in Texas, and catching up with an old friend while eating incredible food.
