#1 Post of the NEW YEAR

Well, its that time of year again!
Committing to making art everyday for the month of January ( or in my case, the whole year) and I can honestly say I have no fear! It will be a grand year filled with art projects, late nights, and inspiration.

Kicking 2012 off with an experiment in sculpture might be fool hardy to some but I'm trudging ahead with my glue gun at the ready.

Here is how far I've gotten in one day..

First concept art of a dragon-beastly-creature and a cocky rider.

Next I sketched the profile out on a cardboard sheet.

After cutting, I started adding width.

After hours of glue gunning (2 burnt fingers) and cutting, here is my beast!

Later I'll add wings, horns, frills to the beasty and dimension to the rider.

After the structure is complete, I'll get my hands dirty with some paper mache!
More to come, but right now Casa Blanca is playing and a bowl of spaghetti is waiting for me.

Trippy Mr. Mortimer Moose

I've finished the paper mache moose!
After hours of labour (3-ish) and careful brush work.. Here's a few stage photos.

1, Mr. Moose Drying

2, Mr. Moose after base painting (2 coats)

3. Mr. Moose after detail work.

I pretty much adore his paint job, zig-zags, stripes and all.
And after suggestions (two) from all you readers (43), I've decided to name him Mortimer (I'm into counting today).

Mortimer Moose.

Next time maybe I'll make a big winged thing. With horns... hmm.

Paper Mache, You Fickle Thing 365 Days A Year!

Hello Friends!

Another Christmas has passed, and a New Year is around the corner.

Do you have any resolutions?
Well.. I do!

I'm going to make the same resolution I did last year.
I'm going to try to make/work on art blog about it every day for the whole of 2012.

In 2011 I made it nearly 3 months before missing a date. Not bad, but I want to do better in 2012. Sure there will be a few panicked nights with napkins scribbled on, but the time dedicated will refine my skill and technique. Plus, as an artist I can be susceptible to mood swings ( not wanting to create) and laziness. This commitment will force me to be diligent... and, It'll be fun!

Now For some art!

While everyone was last minute shopping for Christmas, I mixed flour, water and newspaper to make this moose. Oh, paper mache isn't the easiest medium in the world, but it sure is fun!

Later I'll paint him.. him.. what should his name be?

Marvalo Moose? Waffles the Moose? hmmm..

James Cameron Style Christmas Cards

Christmas Cards
Sarah B Style,

I've thought of making Christmas cards to sell over the years, and I have done it, but it always felt hollow. I don't like creating just to sell. Making art is a soulful experience and an act of love for me. If I start out with a market driven plan, a subject that's trending on etsy, the result feels cheap to me.

So, when I set out to make these cards for some girls who've befriended me since moving to Texas (from Washington State) I really wanted to make something special. I wanted to say thanks, it isn't easy making friends, and I appreciate you all.

I wanted to be sure that my cards got this across without being maudlin.
So, instead of going straight for the sentimental-gushy-hallmark we've all become used to.. I decided to go the James Cameron way.

Effects!!

How can you add effects to a card you ask?

Why, Pop Ups of course!!

AAaaannnnnddddd...

The Finished Cards!

More cards will be made, about 8-ish..

Yup, 8 kind persons, hopefully will like my gifts.

Have a Merry Christmas, DFTBA, and Stay Artsy,

Murder in Christmas Village??

Hello Friends,

Today I want to share with you a snap shot of my not-so-traditional Christmas Village.
Yes, in the miniature town of Sleepy Valley, a gruesome murder has taken place.. and the towns people are all-a-dither, who's going next?

Now before you go saying "What the what??"
This little scene in my otherwise tranquil town of Sleepy Valley, was simply a case of
"Happy Happen-Chance". Mysteriously one of my plastic reindeer was discovered with a broken leg, and that same day a red candle's wax had dripped all over it.

Honestly, I did help a little bit, but it was truely a lucky fluke.. a Christmas Miracle if you will.

I might expand on this idea next year, and create a whole village full of "Who done its??"

hmmm...

Cardboard Canyons & Lost Kitty

Hello Friends,

Can you feel that? That cold breeze? Can you smell those seasonal Lattes, hear the packed stores & those bell ringers on the corners.. yes it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Well, not from where I'm sitting, in a canyon of cardboard boxes. Yes, I'm moving, to a larger apartment with rooms full of elbow space. I just have to get there with all my stuff, my family and my cat that I can hear meowing from behind a wall of boxes.
I had better go find him, poor kitty.

I could really go for an eggnog latte right now..  Here kitty kitty...
